Periodontics

Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that treats diseases of the gums and the bone supporting the teeth. Gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis are the most common causes of tooth loss, so it is crucial to control your gums.

What are gingivitis and periodontitis?

Gingivitis affects the gums, the soft tissues that protect the teeth. Periodontitis is more complex and causes infections in the bone supporting teeth and other tissues, such as the periodontal ligament and root cementum.

Bacteria on the teeth and gums are the most frequent causes of these diseases and can eventually damage tissue.

Symptoms include redness and bleeding of the gums spontaneously or during brushing. The patient may also experience bad breath, receding gums, or loose teeth.

Other causes include smoking, genetic inheritance, stress, pregnancy, and medical conditions like diabetes.

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW THE STATE OF YOUR GUMS?

Take the test to find out the state of your gingival health.

Periodontal disease affects up to 90% of people over the age of 35 years old

How to prevent periodontal disease

The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to maintain proper oral hygiene by controlling the amount of dental plaque build-up.

Regular check-ups with a specialist dentist are crucial for an early diagnosis of the disease should it appear.

Our periodontist, Ana Vallés, and our team of hygienists will give you thorough instructions on good oral hygiene maintenance.

What does the treatment consist of?

To keep your teeth and their surrounding areas healthy, V&V Dental Clinic provides individualized analyses and diagnoses before periodontal treatment.

Treatment options range from professional prophylaxis for gingivitis to scaling and root planing for periodontitis, which remove tartar and plaque from the visible part of the tooth, above the gum, and inside the gum.

In more severe cases where periodontal surgery is required, we remove bacteria, plaque and tartar from the roots of the teeth. In some cases, surgical techniques are needed to replace lost bone and tissue.

Although periodontal disease is a chronic condition, maintaining good periodontal health requires individualized maintenance sessions for each patient based on his or her unique predisposition to the disease.
