Endodontics and Dental Traumatology
Endodontics is a dental treatment that involves the removal of all or part of the tooth pulp before sealing it.
Endodontic treatment is usually required when caries have reached the pulp, causing inflammation or infection. Other causes may include a dental injury or wear brought about by dental bruxism.
What does endodontic treatment involve?
This treatment consists of removing the diseased pulp tissue inside the tooth roots to preserve the tooth and restore it to health:
The infected pulp tissue inside the tooth's canals is removed.
The canals are thoroughly cleaned and prepared.
Finally, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material.
What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment saves a tooth that might otherwise have to be extracted. By eliminating the bacteria, we eliminate the pain and inflammation and avoid their extraction, restoring the tooth to health, its chewing function and aesthetics.
Signs indicating I may need an endodontic treatment (only some of these symptoms or all of them)
Constant and/or intermittent sharp pain
Darkening of the tooth colour
Abscess
Increased sensitivity to cold or heat
Fistula or small lump on the gum
DOES AN ENDODONTICALLY TREATED TOOTH REQUIRE ANY SPECIAL CARE?
Following a root canal treatment and restoration, an endodontically treated tooth behaves identically to a normal tooth. As a result, it requires the same care in terms of hygiene, prevention, and regular check-ups as any other tooth.
If the caries that led to the root canal treatment was extensive, resulting in a weakened tooth, the tooth should be protected with an indirect restoration such as an inlay or crown that covers the cusps of the tooth.
